Lan Ling Wang, 兰陵王 Episode 5 Recap

Xue Wu and Si Ye are so good together I almost wish they could have a little more time to get to know each other more. But alas, it’s time to move from one crisis to another. But on the upside, HE’S HERE. And by “he” I mean the second lead. While he has no dialogue, boy does he make a splash. Dear Elizaphantrex, thanks in advance.

Xue Wu gets caught lighting the explosions at the various army camps by Yu Chi Jiong.

She had given him small packets of black powder which she made, saying that if they shot these at the gates, then they will be able to blow up the gates. An De Wang questions how such small packets could do it. Si Ye Lan Ling Wang decides to trust Xue Wu. He shoots the gates and they blow it right through. An De Wang stares at the black hole in awe and says that Xue Wu sure knows a lot. Si Ye smiles and says no wonder Xue Wu is the Heavenly Maiden, she can do anything. They escape.

Outside the city gates at the forest, they stop to rest. Tai Shi looks worried and Si Ye asks what’s wrong. Tai Shi reveals that Xue Wu was supposed to meet them outside the gates, but she is nowhere to be seen. Si Ye is shocked and worried at the news. His friend warned him not to try and rescue her; they should just got out. He sends Xu Da ahead back to the fortress.

Si Ye suddenly springs out of nowhere and fights his way through the soldiers. Xue Wu falls into the water and doesn’t come up. Si Ye jumps in after her.

He rescues her. She asks why he came back. He replies that he made vows to her in front of the goddess shrine and he recieved her sash. He had promised to protect her. They leave the city again. As they ride away, he asks why  she returned to Dan Zhou. She replied that she found out who he really was and she needed give him a warning in person. He asks that she accompany him to dinner tomorrow night. (Smart boy, rescue and a date)

They go back to the fortress and it turns out that Xu Da is unlikely to survive. They had stuck more than 30 iron arrows into his body so his flesh would slowly rot while he lived. Xue Wu feels bad that she did not learn medicine well. She can do nothing for him.

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.30.42 PM

That night, as promised, Si Ye and Xue Wu have dinner. Si Ye says that he wants to give three toasts in thanks for her deeds. The first toast is for her coming on his rescue mission for Xu Da. Even though she didn’t know Si Ye, she came with him anyway. Xue Wu drinks as well saying that she feels bad that she didn’t learn medicine well enough to heal Xu Da. Xue Wu sees a falling star and makes a wish for Xu Da to recover. She tells Si Ye to make a wish as well.

He toasts her a second time, thanking her for the fake marriage. He assures her that he won’t tell anyone about the marriage, she can marry again without worry. She drinks the second one in a rush, she sadly tells him she understands it was a ruse. She tries to give back his jade pendant but he refuses to take it back, if she ever came to Qi, then all she had to show was the pendant.

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.32.04 PM

Xue Wu says that she has no reason to come back to Qi. Grandmother had told her that there is a woman with the surname Zheng who will marry Si Ye. She falls asleep in his arms. He smiles and says that he hasn’t even toasted her a third time. He says that for this 3rd toast, he wants to thank the heavens for letting him meet such a woman like her–a smart, kind, loyal girl like her.

Xue Wu wakes up and An De Wang tells her that she was carried back by Si Ye. An De Wang tells her that she should leave. Si Ye is busy and can’t see her off.  Xue Wu tells An De Wang to tell Si Ye to not be too embroiled in war.

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.32.35 PM

An De Wang promises to protect Si Ye and gives Xue Wu money for her travels. Si Ye watches as Xue Wu walks out of the fortress, thinking back to the words of Xue Wu’s grandmother. He tells himself that Grandmother was right. Someone as precious and pure as Xue Wu does not belong to this sick and war weary world. He hopes that she has a peaceful and safe life. (That would make a terrible drama.)

Meanwhile in the Kingdom of Zhou, they’ve found the King’s armor near the border of the Kingdom of Qi. The Queen tells Yu Chi Jiong to hurry and find the king, if the court knew then the King’s throne will be in danger.

Xue Wu is traveling back to the village and in the night, in the pouring rain she happens to be back at the inn where she was originally kidnapped. She runs in and yells, “Hey Innkeepers, It’s me the girl you tried to kidnap and sell! But don’t worry I’m not here for retaliation, I just need a place to stay.” (I chortled, that was hilarious).

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.34.03 PM Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.33.48 PM

She goes around and finds the place to be empty, except she finds the bodies of the innkeeper and the wife. Just then, a dark man in rags grabs her and she screams. (Let’s call him Mystery Man for now).

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.35.18 PM

He falls to the floor, too weak to get up. Xue Wu realizes that the man is sick. She hears soldiers coming in searching for a fugitive, she decides to hide him and put him on a cart, which she drags away from the inn.

Xue Wu has dragged the Mystery Man to a small shop on the side of the road. The shop keeper says that it’s clear that the Mystery Man has the plague. Xue Wu should get rid of him as soon as possible. Anyone with the plague is bound to die.

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.36.05 PM Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.35.53 PM

Xue Wu refuses, saying one life is as precious as another.  The shopkeeper says that the man looks like he is from Jian Min Village, where the people all become slaves or lackeys because it’s a very very poor village.

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.36.21 PM

Xue Wu takes the Mystery Man to the village. It’s basically a black heap where the villagres are sitting in mud and eating rotting meet from rotting animals. The water is muddy and brackish, but people are still drinking from it. It’s clear that the plague has struck the village as everyone looks too weak too move, except for a few.

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.36.14 PM

Xue Wu spies someone very familiar. She points and calls out Han Xiao Dong who recognizes her and starts to run away.

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.36.43 PM Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.36.54 PM

Xiao Dong’s friends asks if she knows Xiao Dong and she smiles devilishly, saying yes, she is a very dear friend of Xiao Dong’s. (He was the person who sold her.) They help put Mystery Man into the shade and lead her to see Xiao Dong’s grandmother. Xue Wu realizes that Xiao Dong was saying the truth about his trying to earn money to cure his grandmother and decides to lie for him in front of the grandmother, saying that Xiao Dong was a good person.

Si Ye and his army has searched most of the villages in the regions. However, they haven’t searched Jian Min village, which has the plague (and where Xue Wu is). They decide to search there.

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.37.59 PM Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.37.53 PM

Xiao Dong tells Xue Wu that the Mystery Man is not from their village, he is very sure. The Mystery Man may be wearing clothes like the people of Jian Min village, but his hands looks as if they have never done a rough day of work. Also Mystery Man is way too tall to be from this region.

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.38.30 PM Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.38.23 PM

Xiao Dong asks what should they call Mystery Man. Xue Wu says that since Mystery Man looks so weird, they should call him “Wierdo” or as in Chinese, A Guai.

Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.40.05 PM Screen Shot 2013-08-20 at 11.39.16 PM

Xue Wu tells Xiao Dong that she will only lie for him once. Xiao Dong really apologizes for kidnapping her; he says that he really had no choice because everyone was starving. He promises that since the time he kidnapped her, he hasn’t tried to do that ever again, it was wrong. They are interrupted by a person telling them that soldiers are outside of their village gate, threatening to burn down the village

Thoughts: I know I should not be thinking of this, but that water looks so unappetizingly green that I feel bad for FSF and Ariel. Also. FINALLY. Finally he’s arrived, the second lead. The next episode, is really really good. I hate to not recap it tonight but I need to sleep. There are moments of goodness here. I love how the writers have set up  each character. There is depth to LLW and I love me some conflicted hero. Si Ye knows that he isn’t all good, his hands are too stained with blood. He deeply cares for Xue Wu and her bumbling ways that cause trouble, but he isn’t the greedy type. He knows the saying, “Possess the Heavenly Maiden, Possess the world,” yet he chooses to let her go, he doesn’t want her to be part of his bloody, conflict ridden world. It’s not that he doesn’t want world peace but that he doesn’t want to sacrifice Xue Wu’s safety and happiness to get it. As for Xue Wu, she is held back by the fact that she knows what will happen to him soon and yet she can’t help but fall for him. She knows that she is not to be the ONE in his life, and she is resgined to that fact, but it doesn’t stop her from saving him.

As for Xue Wu saving the Mystery Man. I love how the viewer is able to justify her actions based on her past. She is the kind of person who will save another without regarding the consequences of her actions. She’s gullible but inventive and she treats all hurt beings, regardless of their status, creed, gender, nationality with equal kindness – like rescuing the horse, taking the mask to LLW and saving mystery man. The writer is amazing for writing such a coherent, consistent character from episode 1 that I take my theoretical hat off to him/her.

Love dramas and Cooking, wish I could do both at the same time, but that would destroy both my apartment and my laptop

  1. Thanks for the great posts! 😀

Totally loving the pace of this drama – things happen and it doesn’t drag unlike many other dramas out there. TBH I normally don’t follow dramas cuz of the draggy pace, but this drama is an exception cuz there’s always more happening and it’s got interesting characters who I like (except for Zheng Er cuz I can’t stand her)

Also love how they give our hero LLW character depth. It makes him more interesting than just being an all around good guy. He’s a good man but because of his status and the chaotic world of wars he lives in, he’s forced to stain his hands with blood. He cares for Xue Wu enough to let her go even though she’s Tiannu and everything.

LLW and Xue Wu’s love story is beautiful and I really hope they will have a happy ending (baidu says otherwise but I’m hoping the TV version will have a different ending)…

    1. Me too. I’m refraining from spoilers like Baidu for that reason. I don’t think they will drag out Zhen Er too much based on how fast these arcs are going. But I have to say, I kind of skipped 21-22 because I don’t wanna see Zhen Er. Sigh, why do dramas always feel necessary to have a female rival to the Female Lead?????

  2. Thank you so much for posting these recaps! I usually don’t watch period dramas without subtitles but I got so impatient that I’ve been doing just that! My Chinese is a average, but your recaps fill me in on some of the things I missed/ didn’t understand. I’m completely and totally in love with this drama right now and I love reading your thoughts about it. Thanks so much- you have a new reader!

    1. Awww! Thank you for reading! I love getting comments because I can get to know what other people think about the show as well. Period dramas are always difficult because their language is much more nuanced and lyrical than modern Chinese, some phrases bring both a picturesque feel to the intended meaning and alludes to other meanings as well. but I’m so glad you like the recaps! Thanks!

  3. You know, because of being a non-Chinese person watching this episode w/ no subtitles, I didn’t realized he was the second lead. Hahah. I thought he was just a sick person that really needed medical attention and I was happy for him that Xue Wu found him and is helping him. And is Xiao Dong in love with Xue Wu? I mean, if I was a guy I would probably have a crush on Xue Wu for her kindness and sweetness.

    1. The show never really makes the connection for the view regarding Xiao Dong, well, not from what I’ve seen anyways. But it’s always a bit of a hint, a really blatant hint. I think Xiao Dong does have a crush but he knows that Xue Wu isn’t ever going to be his. Xiao Dong is so adorable that even though he started off kind of sketchy,

  4. Ooh! Thank goodness I browsed around and found your blog! I am currently addicted to LLW and I couldn’t get Episode 5 off my head. LOL! The Underwater Kiss of Life in unappetizingly green water wahahahaha! Right at that moment, all I could think of was the background music which sounded a lot like the opening theme of The Moon Embracing the Sun (Song of the Moon). I was wondering if you knew the title of that song. It’s really stuck in my head, I can’t get over it! The mood was right and the music was perfect!

I’m at Episode 7 right now and am a bit fearing I’ll have second lead syndrome if Yuwen Yong keeps this up. Q__Q
