So, due to minor technical difficulties, being that my computer breathed its last four days ago, I couldn’t update. And honestly it was the hardest thing because there was a huge surge of support and interest in Lu Zhen that warmed the cockles of my heart (yes, I have heart cockles, it’s nothing serious). But back to this episode. There was a quite a bit of flirting and cute in this episode.
At night, after Lu Zhen had stitched Gao Zhan’s wound close. Again, for those who expect the show to explain how someone with no medical knowledge can sew a serious wound close– raise your expectations. Anyways, Gao Zhan develops a fever and boy does he milk it. Of course, he takes advantage of the situation, as any lovestruck, mischievous youth does. Lu Zhen feels his forehead and he moans, he’s so hot, will she rub his back with a cold cloth?
Lu Zhen asks if he really took the doctor’s advice seriously, and he says, weakly, I don’t know… I just feel really hot right now (I bet you do). So while Lu Zhen goes to get some water, he takes off his shirt literally in a second. She comes back and starts wiping his back.
He says, go lower and she asks if she’s got the spot. He says to go even lower. She’s going so low that she’s going to get to his butt. She throws the towel down, exasperated. He smiles as she flips him over and puts the shirt back on (let’s face it, everyone who watched this probably thought it wasn’t long enough.
He says that she’s lucky that he’s got an arm wound. She asks what he means, and he says, “well, imagine what you would have to do if I got hurt in the area where Sima Qian had been” (Sima Qian was a historical character who was castrated). She rolls him across the floor out of indignation. He cries out in pain and she suddenly realized that he’s still a patient.
Lu Zhen plays a song to put Gao Zhan to sleep, but when she goes to feel his forehead, he opens his eyes and has this most adorable, dorky, quirky smile on his face. He asks why she keeps saving him. She answers that if she saw an injured puppy, then she would go save it. He asks if he’s a puppy to her, she says no, he’s a human being.
Gao Zhan reveals to Lu Zhen that he comes from a wealthy family (conveniently not telling her that he’s the crown prince) But that his father really loved him, and promised all the family inheritance to Gao Zhan. But his father died suddenly while Gao Zhan wasn’t in the city. His Stepmother pushed her son to gain the inheritance. Gao Zhan doesn’t want to fight with his brother, whom he loves very much. And he knows that his brother is weak and sickly, the doctor says that his brother won’t live past thirty. Gao Zhan wants to wait until his brother passes peacefully and then claim his inheritance. But the stepmom wants his life. Lu Zhen observes that they’ve both lost their mothers so you. Gao Zhan replies that they are also similar in that they won’t let other people decide their fate, they will make their own way in the world. He explains to her that the reason he tried to kill himself is that there is a family rule that says anyone crippled can’t inherit. Gao Zhan couldn’t see a reason to live. Lu Zhen is outraged by this rule and says that it’s so stupid. By that rule, everyone who served in the military must be useless. Gao Zhan agrees and says that the first thing he will change once he inherits, will be to change that rule.
Lu Zhen says, as long as he has the will to live then she should return his jade to him. He asks how come she didn’t sell it (in happy amazement) Lu Zhen points to the fruit and tells him that she’s been selling the fruit. He asks if she’s been climbing trees. Of course, she replies, girls can climb trees as good as boys. He agrees that girls are as good as boys. Lu Zhen sighs that it’s a pity that girls can’t take the administration test, then she can become a court official. Gao Zhan says that with her talent she can become the first female prime minister (Really show? Such subtle foreshadowing, only your title is more obvious).
Gao Zhan tells Lu Zhen to keep the jade pendant, true, it’s his valued possession but once he had given it to her, he had no intention to ever get it back.
Life for Lu Zhen and Gao Zhan is idyllic. She cooks his medicine and he catches food. She says that his wound is almost healed. He’ll be going back soon. He says that life with her in this little house is peaceful, it makes him forget the whole mess. She says that he’ll get tired of her. He looks at her and tells her that will never happen.
OF Course, this is when the guards come and chase the love birds. They run to a cliff and Lu Zhen falls over, Gao Zhan grabs her arm. She tells him to let go, otherwise they will both die. He screams never, he’ll hold on forever. His wound is reopening and she pulls her hand out of his hold. She falls as he screams. In that moment, Gao Zhan’s soldiers come and rescue him.
Lu Zhen’s stepmother is mad that they can’t find her. But her head of household tells her that a girl had been found dead in wedding clothes that looked like Lu Zhen. She’s placated by the story. It turns out that Lu Zhen’s half-sister had help fed the story to the household to save her sister.
Lu Zhen wakes up from her fall, having been slowed in her descent by a tree branch. (Suspend disbelief here) She hitches a ride back into town where she goes to find the doctor. The doctor believing she was there to haunt him, tells her that he had accidentally revealed her and Gao Zhan’s whereabouts to the authorities. In his scared panic, Lu Zhen grabs some money, medicine, men’s clothes.
Gao Zhan wakes up and the first thing he wants to do is to find Lu Zhen. His guard tells him no, that it’s too dangerous, his wounds have reopened. Gao Zhan doesn’t care and asks him to lure the Dowager’s spies away. At that moment, the Emperor comes to visit.
Lu Zhen tries to travel with caravan to another kingdom but is told she needs more money she has. She goes to a pawn shop where she tries to pawn off the jade pendant. The owner sees the pendant and gives her the money, telling her that the pendant was too valuable for the likes of him to take. Lu Zhen overhears that the jade came from the house of the Princess, who, after the Dowager, Emperor, and Royal Consort, is the next most powerful in the land.
Lu Zhen, seeing that there are still wanted posters of her in the city decides to try her luck in becoming a palace maid again. She is met at the gates by Wang Shang Yi (Royal Consort Xiao’s faction) who barks that she was kicked out once, now she will be severely punished if she tries again. Lou Qing Qiang (Dowager Empress’s faction) overhears and comes to Lu Zhen’s aid. She asks to see the jade and recognizes that it’s the Princess’s. She allows Lu Zhen to enter the palace as a maid, saying that Lu Zhen has a strong resemblance to someone. Wang Shang Shi is mad and uneasy and vows to get Lu Zhen kicked out.
Lu Zhen’s first day as a palace maid is eye-opening. She learns that there are 4 grades of palace maids, 1st grade being the best, 2nd being a level below, both are called Gu Gu. Palace maids can rise in ranks through tests and deeds. Lu Zhen will enter with no rank, only after a few years will palace maids rise through the ranks, starting at the 4th, then 3rd, etc. Female palace officials also have ranks but we’ll get to that in later episodes.
Lu Zhen is led to the maids training center, where the girls ask her why she is so late. She lies and says that she was sick. Two girls (one of who threw water over her desk during the maids test) says that Lu Zhen has lied, she was actually thrown out.
At that moment, Head Teacher Yang and Assistant Teacher Song comes in. A Bi tells Teacher Yang that Lu Zhen is a fraud, and Yang slaps her across the face several times, telling her that the palace is not a place to throw accusations, she must follow palace rules. Teacher Yang calls Lu Zhen to follow her.
Thoughts : I did love the first of this episode more than possible. Few ancient dramas do sexy. And not many do it so flirtatiously, which is why I will look over the obvious faults and cracks (and crazies) of this drama. I’m not going to argue with the impossibility of surviving the fall, or why every heroine in Chinese drama needs to go over a cliff. Because, let’s face it, most of China has some pretty tame terrain, and cliffs are hard to come by. Literally, I feel like if there is one, you would have to climb it first, and if you were chased by men, why would you go there in the first place. Now that Lu Zhen is in the palace, we will see more standard palace intrigue. And while they don’t have the subtly of Zhen Huan (which after a while makes you kind of start losing faith in humanity), it’s certainly worth watching for Lu Zhen and Gao Zhan’s interaction. He’s going to have to come clean about being a prince, but first, they still have ways to go before falling genuinely, passionately, head over heels in love.
Let me know what you liked/didn’t like about this drama!
