Lu Zhen is not only resourceful, but she is reactive when shit hits the fan. And In this episode, her world is turned upside, down. The best part about this episode was that the two main characters got to meet and Lu Zhen proves how smart she can be in a terrible situation.
The episode starts off with the nanny gently chiding Lu Zhen and telling her that she can’t just devote her life to making pottery and taking care of business, she needs to start preparing her dowery. Lu Zhen says that her dad has already provided it. The nanny agrees, yes, half of the wealth in the house is already being given to Lu Zhen in dowery, but Lu Zhen needs to make new beddings and clothes that will impress the in law. After all she is set to marry the second son of a wealthy merchant. Lu Zhen doesn’t really want to get married, and she makes this point clear to her nanny. She wants to accomplish something, and besides, her dead mother would totally understand her.
Lu Zhen’s half-sister, Lu Jia after having a fight with her mother (who hates Lu Zhen) comes to Lu Zhen for comfort. Lu Zhen promises to give her sister something good from her jewels. Lu Jia picks up a red coral necklace and tells Lu Zhen that this is the one she wants. Lu Zhen says she can’t give that one. Master Lu overhears and is dissapointed with Lu Zhen’s behavior, effectively grounding her for being mean to her sister.
Master Lu takes Lu Jia out to get her an identical necklace but he find out that the necklace was treated with a kind of poison that makes it impossible for women to get pregant. Only concubines who do not want to get pregnant wears this kind of jewelry. After investigating, Master Lu finds out that it is his own wife that tried to poision Lu Zhen.
Lu Zhen, in the mean time has sneaked out of the house because she needs to take care of the family business. She meets Gao Zhan, who has survived the assasination but can’t get into the city because of the guards at the capital gates.
The guards have been told to stop anyone who was from the region (Rou Ran people) that Gao Zhan was last seen from entering. He sees Lu Zhen helping Rou Ran people enter and he asks for the same help. He offers to put his prized sword in her possession as a sign of good faith. Lu Zhen recognizes that the sword was made by a famous master. She says that he must not be just anyone and helps him get into the capital.
Once they are in, Lu Zhen offers the sword back to him. She says that he must be an important person, since everyone needs help sometime, she’s glad to help him. He tells her that if fate ever bring them together, he’ll take her out drinking (you’ll do more than that, my buck)
A funeral is being held for Gao Zhan. Zhang Gong Zhu (The Elder Princess), is in attendance with the Dowager Empress and the Emperor. The Dowager, believing that Gao Zhan is dead, names him the next heir to the throne posthumously. The Edict is ordered and Gao Zhan rushes in, saying “I accept!” The Empress is dumbfounded but the Emperor is delighted at his brother’s appearance.
Gao Zhan later explains to his friends that he was helped by a (Gui Ren) which roughly translates to Highly Valued/ Lucky Person, a high compliment meaning that the person was very important. Royal Concubine Xiao’s maid, Wang Shang Yi comes and asks after him, and asks if he had any messages for the Royal Concubine. Gao Zhan says no, he isn’t on that good a terms with her, she is the wife of his brother after all.
The Royal Concubine Xiao hears his non answer and knows that he is still mad at her. She says it’s not matter, as long as she can make sure he gets on the throne, everything will come after. Clearly Royal Concubine Xiao is in love with Gao Zhan, her brother-in-law, she has hopes that he will marry her once he assumes the throne (as was an ancient custom). She says that as long as the Emperor only loves her, and she makes sure that she doesn’t have any children. It will be fine.
Lu Zhen’s stepmother and her uncle can’t sit and watch as Lu Zhen gains more trust and power in the household. Lu Zhen’s stepmother learns that Master Lu has transferred all the wealth to Lu Zhen after her marriage. They plan to kill Master Lu, and does it while he’s talking to Lu Zhen. Master Lu dies while drinking a cup of poisoned tea.
They accuse Lu Zhen in front of the leaders of the Lu clan, saying that Lu Zhen killed her father so she can get all the inheritance he willed her. They should drown Lu Zhen in the pond. Lu Zhen defends herself responds, she didn’t give her father the tea, it wasn’t the usual tea, the wrong serving girl had brought it in, also why would she kill her father now and not later if she was after the inheritance (which she can only get after she’s married). They call the servant girl who served the tea, who, not willing to tell the council that she was under the orders of the stepmom, kills her self. The council calls for the case to be closed, they don’t want it to reach the magistrates otherwise the scandal will be bad for the family name.
That night Lu Jia comes and warns her sister that the Stepmom is going to sell Lu Zhen in marriage as a concubine to an old man.
Lu Zhen runs away to the house of her original betrothed. There she overhears her betrothed to his parents, saying that he’ll be able to get half the inheritance if he marries her.
His parents disagree and says that now that Lu Zhen is out of favor with the Stepmom, there is no way that she can fetch that price. They better send her back to the Lu Family in the morning. In panic, Lu Zhen flees.
The most noteworthy part of this drama was the bit where Lu Zhen meets Gao Zhan. Other than that… well, it only gets better than here.
