This Episode blew my socks off. I have to say that I’m surprised that Cheryl Yang could be so good at playing Wu Zhang Mei. This episode was good at showing that An De Feng, beneath his scheming exterior and his grand master plan to hurt Wu Zhang Mei, lies a hurt little boy who really just wants to fall back into love with the sassy, brave girl he once adored. His glances, his jealousy, and his unwillingness to leave her side are all pretty good indications that he’s falling hard for the girl and there’s no going back. Also he got a hickie from an old lady for her. If that does not say love, nothing will.
Wu Zhang Mei is stingy for a reason. She and her roommate runs a tiny restaurant that use to be a dojo where she taught Tae Kwon Do with her adoptive older brother. She’s on the brink of losing the land and her apartment because she and the roommate are having a hard time of making ends meet. That being said, Wu Zhang Mei is doing everything and anything to make extra money, including selling Miss Beauty’s cast offs. But the shoes that she got from An De Feng are a different matter. And after arguing back and forth with herself and her roommate, she decided not to sell the shoes that was worth two months of her rent.
An De Feng on the other hand is plotting his revenge against his step dad, who had taken over his mom’s company from An De Feng’s grandpa’s stewardship. An De Feng basically hates his step dad and along with planning Wu Zhang Mei’s demise, he’s deciding who he wants to take down first.
He goes to the office next day and dazzles the employees with his good looks, has a show down with the step dad and buggs his secretary for Wu Zhang Mei’s information so he can go and stalk her. He finds that she’s in trouble for the Miss Beauty Switcharoo debacle and can only redeem herself and her month’s salary if she takes on a “Black Market Job”.
An De Feng is becoming a certifiable stalker as he follows Wu Zhang Mei and a few other shady characters to a kidnapping exchange. By the way, whoever Wu Zhang Mei is working with, he’s one hottie.
But back to the story. Wu Zhang Mei and the Hottie gives the money to the fat guy who tells them they are all going to die. An De Feng, hiding behind the wall basically runs away in fear.
But once he got into the car, he realized that he couldn’t leave Wu Zhang Mei to the hands of the gangsters and goes back. Meanwhile, Wu Zhang Mei and the Hottie has taken care of most of the gangsters except the fat guy, who proceeds to beat the two up. An De Feng comes back running starts this hilarious fight scene with the fat gangster. In the end, the fat dude chases An De Feng around the building and they throw red plastic chairs at each other, while screaming incoherently.
Hottie has recovered enough to help Wu Zhang Mei take out the ganster, and they rescue the kidnapped guy. As they step out of the building, Wu Zhang Mei gives An De Feng a big hug, which does not sit well with the Hottie. Who demands to know why An De Feng was here. An De Feng basically can’t say that he was stalking the girl so he lies and says that he has a house around the corner. Since Hottie is injured, Wu Zhang Mei asks that they use the house to clean Hottie’s wounds.
An De Feng takes them to a random stranger’s lavish home and the lady owner, eating her lunch does a double take at the 4 people barging into her home. An De Feng lies and says that she’s the house keeper, and how dare she eat without greeting them. He makes her follow him upstairs, and the lady’s lusty tiger eyes are literally lighting up. An De Feng first calls her “Mrs” which she retorts, “you’re cursing at me, try again” he’s confused and she tells him, “I’m a young lady”. Even though she looks about 42. He says, “I need to borrow your house for a little while, ask any price” She laughs and says, I’m rich, I don’t need money. And steps closer to him. “I need something else…”
And Cut to Wu Zhang Mei cleaning Hottie’s wounds… yum. He grabs her hand as she cleans a cut on his ribs and apologizes for thinking that she wouldn’t be good in the field bc she was a woman, he will never underestimate her or any other woman. And then he says that for a girl like her, she needs a strong man to be her partner. Which is when An De Fang comes down the stair and sees the two sitting so close and intimate together.
He rushes in between them and Wu Zhang Mei sees a giant red spot on his neck. He said he was stung by a wasp. Which is really just code that he got a hickie from the old rich lady. His face of resigned tolerance as she closes in, makes me cry from laughter.
Hottie is about to point out that its a hickie when the ambulance arrives. Hottie tells Zhang Mei to come and find him in Hong Kong. Wu Zhang Mei shakes his hand and An De Feng Promptly tries to break them up. As the Ambulance drives away, Wu Zhang Mei flashes back to her big brother, who was carried away in an ambulance. She involuntarily cries out for her big bro, which An De Feng Mistakes jealously that she’s crying out for the hottie.
As he takes her home, he asks why she want to be in a profession that was so dangerous. Doesn’t she have any dreams? She replies that she wants to protect people, that to go out fighting to protect people was the bravest way she knew to die. She wants be a person who can protect others thats her dream.
He drops her off, trying to get her to go to the hospital but she says she’ll be fine. He lets her go reluctantly, of course telling her that the Hong Kong hottie is unreliable and that whatever she does, she can’t go to find him. An De Fang’s jealous is just about the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. She walks off as he mutters to himself that liking her when she was little was crazy, now if he falls for her again, he’ll need to go see a psychologist. But he can’t tear himself away from her as she sits outside, eating her bread. He chides to himself that she doesn’t even take care of her body.
Wu Zhang Mei meanwhile is reminescing about the days of living with her Older Brother, who was killed in a car accident, saving a child while crossing the street. An De Feng hardens his heart and drives away.
An De Feng is also having a blast from the past as he remembers that as a child, he and his mom got abducted, by a man who turned out to be his real dad. An De Feng escaped and tried to call his step dad who hung up on him and also his mom died. And we see why he’s so twisted about revenge today as he recalls his kid self slaping his own face out of frustration and hatred of his stammer that has turned everyone against him. He’s determined to make his mark and way in the lives of those that has hurt him so much.
He also buys Wu Zhang Mei’s apartment, after noting that she goes out of the way to get money to afford her place. Aw, you big softie, you totally love her. Wu Zhang Mei and her roomate wake up to find their landlord telling them to hurry up and move out. Someone has bought the place. If they want to keep living here then they have to take it up with the new landlord.
They go to meet the new landlord in a fancy resturant. And proceed to beat him up even after Wu Zhang Mei introduces him to her friend as the guy that bought her the shoes. She missunderstands his intentions and beats him to a pulp. Again, it is hilarious that she doubles her intensity in the beating when she realises that he’s the one that bought her place.
But as she and her friend goes back to the place and sees all the new furniture being moved in, they realize that they made a huge mistake. That the new landlord bought the place so Wu Zhang Mei could live more comfortably. And thus they invite him up for a huge apology barbecue. Where Wu Zhang Mei sings an apology song and An De Feng walks up really close to her and says, “You look so ugly with that fake nose and glasses you have on” he pulls it off. But we all know its his excuse to get closer to her,
They talk about her big brother and An De Feng learns that she’s an orphan, her mom had died long ago and she was raised by an adoptive big brother. She realizes that wooden kung fu training dummy her big bro had left her was gone and she begins to panic. It was the only thing that he had left her since his death. An De Feng realizes that it must have been thrown away and they go to the dump to dig it out. Once they find it, An De Feng takes her hand and cleans it gently, saying, “You want to protect others, but you don’t even look after yourself.” She feels its too close and tries to walk away but he pulls her in for a tight hug.
Thoughts. I LOVE these two. They are mean to be in a way that an OTP (one true pair) is suppose to be. Unlike Replacement Princess which is going frustratingly down the crapper. This is light paced with a oomph at the most appropriate times. I love the back story of the hero, it makes him understandable. But I also hope that there is less flashbacks to darker times and more romance between the pair. There is a perfect chemistry to them and the story really knows how to make the viewer feel that they were meant to be together despite all. This has the potential to be a hook line sinker drama. I really hope that it keeps going that way,
